Land Back Issue launch: Meme workshop with ijotiKak

September 15, 2020 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm EDT

Briarpatch‘s special Land Back issue is here – 60 pages of case studies, essays, investigations, and art by Indigenous writers and artists, all amplifying and sharpening the call to return land to Indigenous Peoples. To honour #LandBack‘s origins as a meme, we’re partnering with Idle No More to launch the Land Back Issue with a virtual meme workshop led by ijotiKak!

Register now:

The workshop:

Let’s make some memes!!! Your Inuk auntie ijotiKak is here to chat memes with you. We’ll touch on meme ethics and etiquette before launching into the fun stuff. We’ll share our favourite memes, and then learn some tips and tricks for making our own: I’ll talk about which apps I use, how to manipulate images and add text in specific ways, tips to make text more readable, etc. It’ll be interactive – not just me lecturing you over the internet. Then the Meme Council (yes that is a real thing) will choose the best memes to win a prize! Stoodis!

The Land Back Meme Contest:

The five best memes, judged by the Meme Council, will receive a free one-year subscription to Briarpatch Magazine, starting with the Land Back issue. To enter, 1) post your Land Back meme on Instagram, 2) tag @briarpatchmag and 3) use the hashtag #LandBackMemeContest. (If your account is private, you can DM your meme entry to @briarpatchmag instead.) The deadline is September 20. You can enter up to five times, but the memes you enter have to be original (meaning you made them yourself). We’ll post the winners on the @briarpatchmag Instagram!
